Manchester City-bound striker Julian Alvarez scored six goals for River Plate in the Copa Libertadores group stage on Wednesday.

Alvarez, 22, took home two match balls as his River Plate side ran out 8-1 winners against Peruvian outfit Alianza Lima.

The Argentina international helped his current employers race into a 3-0 lead before half-time as he netted a hat-trick inside the first 41 minutes.

His team-mate Santiago Simon made it 4-0 before Alvarez added another two goals in the 54th and 57th minutes.

Elias Gomez made it 7-0 in River Plate's final group-stage encounter before Alvarez bagged his sixth goal to round off the scoring for his side. In doing so, he became the first player in River Plate's history to net six goals in a single match.

Alianza Lima's Pablo Lavandeira scored a consolation goal from the penalty spot in the 89th minute but it was Alvarez who stole the show thanks to his double hat-trick.

River Plate topped their group by claiming 16 points from a possible 18 to progress to the round of 16 stage.

Alvarez has scored 15 goals in 19 games for River Plate this season.

Manchester City agreed a £14 million deal to sign the highly-rated forward in January but he will remain at River Plate until at least the summer.

Alvarez is not the only striker who is expected to be at Manchester City in time for the new campaign as Pep Guardiola's side have also added Erling Haaland to their ranks.

City activated Haaland's £51 million release clause to prise the Norwegian away from Borussia Dortmund.

Guardiola led his side to the Premier League title on the last day of the season thanks to an enthralling 3-2 win over Aston Villa.
