Maybe ego or social pressure or because their love was turning into something dangerous, like an addiction or obsession! But whatever the reason, they never had closure..
They went on with their lives, trying to forget each other and eventually even dated other people. But they could never really move on.
Eventually, one night, she dreams of him and misses him so badly that she calls him up crying.
Hearing her voice, triggers his inner passion and love and weakness for her for her that he was probably trying to suppress. And it is so strong and overpowering that it's as good as he being unfaithful to his current girlfriend.
